Avon Challenge

  • Initially each club hosted this competition in turn, as decided by the final League position at the end of the season. Since each club has now hosted the Day, we now go in turn.

Challenge Rules

  1. Team aggregate stableford.

  2. 18 Holes, White Tees (or equivalent competition tee), using the men's course and slope ratings. Maximum (active) Handicap 18, 85% of the course playing handicap after calculation using the handicap index and the course/slope rating of the host course.

  3. For 13 clubs, 5 pairs (10 players) per club, with the home club to contribute a sixth, non-counting pair. With 12 or fewer clubs, 6 Pairs to compete (12 players) per club. Teams and handicaps must be sent to the League Secretary by Wednesday prior to the event to facilitate making the score sheet and scorecards. Should exceptional circumstances arise and an incomplete or no team be fielded at the Challenge, or a club has withdrawn from the Avon League, that club may still be liable for costs associated with the Challenge at the discretion of the host course. This must be notified to the League Secretary as soon as possible. By entering the Avon League, each member club at the start of each season of play in the League (usually around April 1st) agrees to contribute their share of the Trophy Fund for the League, Trophy and Challenge for that year

  4. There shall be a shotgun start to the competition at 8:30 a.m., subject to revision by the host club.

  5. Scoring: Pairs Better Ball Stableford. All pairs scores to count.

  6. In the event of a tie, the result will be decided by the aggregate of the team cards.  Back 9; back 6;back 3; back 1 etc

  7. No Buggies are allowed unless the player has a severe disability or medical certificate. Only the player requiring buggy may use it and carry clubs. No other players or clubs allowed.

  8. Any team late to the tee for the shotgun start shall forfeit points from holes missed. Should no marker be available, the other pair in the same group shall be allowed to mark their own scorecard until the late pair re-establishes their correct position on the course.

  9. Captains are responsible for checking scorecards. Any cards reaching the scorers which have been completed incorrectly will incur a penalty of 5 points.

  10. Pairs are only eligible to win one prize, the highest value prize that they win. Other prizes will be awarded to the next best pair who has not already won a prize.

  11. Any clubs with missing lineups from the corresponding Avon League season will be assessed a 5 point team penalty per missing lineup, to be deducted from their total score.

  12. Player eligibility

  • (a) Players must be a current member of a currently participating club.

    (b) For players who hold membership at multiple participating clubs, they should represent their “Home” club (i.e. the club at which their handicap is held).

    (c) Should a player wish to represent an “Away” club (i.e. a club of which they are a current member but not the one where their handicap is held), they must first obtain the permission of the Committee of both their “Home” and “Away” clubs, in addition to the permission of the League Secretary.

    (d) Players are only eligible to change their nominated club once in a calendar year. This applies across all Avon competitions.

    (e) Should a club be found to be fielding an ineligible player, they will lose 20 points from their team total on the day and the ineligible player will be disqualified from winning any prizes.


  • The golf shall be followed at approximately 2:30 p.m. by a meal; the prize-giving ceremony shall begin at approximately 3:30 p.m. Smart-casual attire shall be worn in the clubhouse.

  • The cost per player shall be based on:

  • The sweep shall be divided and paid cash and balls:

  

i) Best Pair Stableford score on the day £
ii) Runner Up Pair Stableford score on the day £
iii) Third Pair Stableford score on the day £
iv) Best Front Nine Stableford score on the day £
v) Best Back Nine score on the day £
vi) The Winner of a competition for the longest drive £ balls
viii) The Winner of a competition for the ball nearest the pin on a short hole £ balls


  • 2s Competition is always spent on golf balls in the Pro shop at the host club with the balls shared out amongst players with 2s.
